Next Generation STS Short-term / Operative Risk Calculator - ACSD

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has launched its next-generation Short-Term Risk Calculator to assess risk of operative mortality, major morbidity, and complications after most cardiac procedure categories in the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD). This new calculator – developed at the STS Research and Analytic Center – is mobile-friendly and features a simplified, intuitive design to improve physician-patient decision-making.

New Features Include:

• The Calculator features a single-page or computer screen format showing all inputs and full results.

• The Calculator design is auto-responsive to screen size and is mobile-friendly with full functionality.

• Risk estimate calculations are current and harmonized with the latest STS ACSD harvest analytics; i.e., calculations are always based on the most recent analysis of nationwide data available; All ACSD models will be updated every 3 months.

• All risk estimates are procedure and outcome combination specific, updated in real-time with each new input, and presented in user friendly tabular format.

• Automated calculations are regenerated with every user input with reduced need for user clicks.

• The Calculator features automated handling of out-of-range and missing values.

• User help is available for all the Calculator’s input fields via information buttons or the hover feature.

• Clinical summary of the simulated patient scenario is generated and updated in real-time with every input.

• Copy function of Results sections and save Results to PDF are available. Print Screen functionality is also available.

• Links to other current and planned STS risk calculators will be available by selecting from a drop-down list of calculators (e.g., Adult congenital coming soon), or directly from the Planned Surgery drop-down menu of cardiac procedures.

The New Short-Term Risk Calculator allows you to calculate a patient’s risk of mortality and morbidities for the most commonly performed cardiac surgeries. It incorporates STS risk models that are designed to serve as statistical tools to account for the impact of patient risk factors on operative Outcomes. STS risk calculator estimates should be considered as only one of several sources of information in cardiothoracic decision-making and patient counseling. Other sources include but are not limited to the clinical judgment of the surgeon, referring cardiologist, and primary care physician, as well as patient and family preferences. The risk calculator should never be used to exclude patients from surgery based on higher risks associated with a single characteristic (e.g., sex, race, payer).

You can read about these implemented risk models in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery ( Part 1—Background, Design Considerations, and Model Development ¹ and Part 2—Statistical Methods and Results .²)
